The Banco de la Republica or the National Bank of the Republic of Colombia was created in June 1880. It was founded by the Government with an objective that it will act as a banker to the Government and will promote credit.

The bank issues and administers the currency and exercises the function of banker to the banks as well as to the Government. In addition, the bank also supervises the monetary system, credit, and the exchange rate policy of the country.

Apart from this the important function of the bank is to maintain the fiscal stability in the country. To manage the inflation level by maintaining price stability is a major area of concern for the bank.

The Board of Directors of the bank consists of 10 members representing both the private sector and the government.
