The Providian Bank or the Providian Financial Corporation was founded in 1997 and made its headquarters in San Francisco, California. It was one of the leading credit card issuers in the country until it was sold to Washington Mutual (Wamu) in October 2005 for a whopping $6.5 billion. At the time it was sold, the Providian Bank had more than 10 million card holders.

Let us take a step back and look at what the Providian Bank was once about. The website was The company first started in 1904. It was at first the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company. In its heyday during which it was the leading credit card issuer in the United States  the financial company provided customers with credit cards, savings accounts, money market accounts, online banking services, checking accounts, home equity loans, phone banking service, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on.

Two of the biggest competitors of Providian were Citibank which issues Citicards and the Household Bank Credit Card which issues its cards through the HSBC Bank in Nevada. Many people chose Providian because it protected its customers from online fraud and identity theft. The company offered both MasterCard as well as Visa credit cards to its many customers.
