To bring agriculture at par with the industries an intelligent interplay between the traditional and the contemporary factors is required. These factors are provided outside the agricultural arena.
A farmer in the olden times used to produce only to sustain himself and his family. But a modern day farmer selects agriculture as a profession not only to provide for his family but also to lead his life solvently by fulfilling other needs. To achieve his goal a farmer requires to produce and sell his crops at a proper price. Therefore, the market becomes an important factor since a farmer sells his produce in the market. The price at which he sells his goods should be good enough to cover his cost of production. This works as an incentive for the farmer.
In the earlier days the agricultural production was not market driven because in those days people were not much bothered about living a lavish life. These days farmers think about profits and the way to obtain them. The purchasing power of the people have also increased these days and that is affecting the demand of the people. If the production reaches a good height then the option for exporting the produce and earning foreign exchange also opens up for the producers. Perishable items produced by the farmers also determine production.
Modern agriculture not only depends on the conventional factors but also depends on many other factors. Therefore, it is very much important on the part of the farmers to understand the importance of market. To meet the present day demand agriculture should work hand and gloves with the market economy. Agriculture should not remain aloof from the other factors of production. Agriculture must adjust with the technological development and cope with the changes resulting from that. However, it is not possible for the farmers to perform the duties alone therefore the establishment of such institutions are required which will be able to look after the intermingling of the various factors with agricultural production. Only these institutions can help agriculture establish a relation with the other sectors successfully.
