Promoting Equality in Rural Population is one of the most important effect of Agrarian Reform. Equity can be achieved by reducing poverty and increasing the productivity in the rural areas.

Agrarian reform promotes equity in rural population in many ways. These are:

  • Reducing Poverty:
    • The land productivity, measured by dividing the farm output by farm size, has been doubled by Agrarian Reform. The farmers who have benefited from Agrarian Reform are using modern chemical fertilizers which has enhanced the productivity of land. Therefore poverty can be reduced easily.
    • Agrarian reform accelerates the investment on human capital by the householders. The reason is that the members of those families have been facilitate with high education which is also a result of Agrarian Reform. These investments will increase the earning capability which, in turns, improve the family income. So poverty will be minimized as well.
    • The rural credit facilities offered by the government would increase productivity and income of the farmer.
    • Water plays an important role to improve the productivity. Irrigation facilities are provided to to the farmers of all classes along with proper sanitation conveniences. So these will surely improve the productivity.
  • Redistribution of Land:

Land ceilings are imposed so that land is redistributed from the large land holders to the small.

  • Proper Compensation:

The land owners are compensated for the imposition of ceiling. Such compensations are biased in favour of the big land owners due to their strong political influence. This , in turn, widens the income gap between the big and the small land owners.

  • Transformation of Political Power:

Agrarian reform allows the Government to interfere in the land management and rural politics. So power shifts from the big land owners to the Government which cuts down their political influence. This transformation has a significant influence on the allocation of compensation in an equitable manner.
